A Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a catastrophic and life changing event that affects around 300 – 400 people in Australia each year.
A SCI can either result in Paraplegia or Quadriplegia, and every injury is unique & different depending on where the spinal cord and its nerves are damaged.
A SCI can either be a complete or incomplete injury, meaning that messages from the brain do not pass the level of injury (complete), or some messages do (incomplete).
A SCI affects bodily functions differently in each individual case; normal everyday functions such as bowel and bladder control, sexual function and even body temperature control can be compromised.
This results in increased living costs such as:-
- Specialised Equipment, such as Wheelchairs & Hoists
- Home & Car Modifications
- Personal Care Services
- Additional Holiday Costs
- Medication & Continence Supplies
- Ongoing Medical Expenses
- Physiotherapy & Ongoing Rehabilitation Costs
A specific detailed budget needs to be constructed to account for all the abovementioned additional costs of living with a SCI.
In addition, non-material ambitions need to also be addressed. If individuals are too focused on the material side of their life they are missing out on the essential ingredients of life that make us happy, such as:-
- Health & Leisure
- Work Arrangements
- Spirituality
- Family & Friends
